چکیده

conclusions this nonrandomized comparison of stent types in kidney transplantation supports the use of prophylactic double-j stents in terms of decreased ureteric complications and reduced length of hospital stay. patients and methods a retrospective analysis was performed on data of renal transplantations performed at our institution in a 12-month period. in this period, external and double-j stents were used in parallel. length of hospital stay and stent-associated complications were evaluated. results in 76 kidney transplants, 43 external (group 1) and 33 double-j (group 2) urinary stents were used. no significant difference was observed in the number of urinary tract infections, ureteric stenosis or necrosis. the mean overall length of hospital stay was comparable in both groups (20.7 days in group 1 vs 19.3 days in group 2, p = 0.533). for patients without immunological complications, the hospital stay was significantly reduced using double-j stents (12.9 days in group 1, 10.8 days in group 2, p = 0.018). leakage of the ureteroneocystostomy occurred in 6 out of 43 patients in group 1 (13.9%). no case of anastomotic insufficiency was observed in group 2 (p = 0.035). macrohematuria was detected in 13 out of the 43 patients in group 1 (30.2%), compared to 3 out of 33 patients in group 2 (9.1%; p = 0.045). objectives this study aimed to compare outcomes of double-j versus percutaneous ureteral stent placement in renal transplantation. background kidney transplantation has long been recognized as the best available therapy for end stage kidney disease.

Double-J Versus External Ureteral Stents in Kidney Transplantation: A Retrospective Analysis

BACKGROUND Kidney transplantation has long been recognized as the best available therapy for end stage kidney disease. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to compare outcomes of double-J versus percutaneous ureteral stent placement in renal transplantation. PATIENTS AND METHODS A retrospective analysis was performed on data of renal transplantations performed at our institution in a 12-month period...

Self-expanding metallic ureteral stents for treatment of ureteral stenosis after kidney transplantation.

The incidence of post-renal transplantation ureteral stenosis ranges from 2%-12%. Because the role of self-expanding ureteral metallic stents for its treatment has been scarcely reported, the aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of Nitinol stents. Eleven ureteral stenoses in patients with chronic graft dysfunction (8 cases) or high surgical risk (3 cases) were treated by antegrade per...

Fluoroscopic Placement of Double-Pigtail Ureteral Stents

PURPOSE Double-pigtail ureteral stent is placed cystoscopically after ureteroscopy. We describe a technique for fluoroscopic placement of ureteral stents and demonstrate its use in a non-randomized prospective study. MATERIALS AND METHODS Double-pigtail stents were placed either fluoroscopically or cystoscopically in 121 consecutive patients. In the fluoroscopic method, the stent was placed o...

Bacterial characteristics and clinical significance of ureteral double-J stents in children.

OBJECTIVE To determine the incidence of urinary tract infection in those patients that we have used an ureteral double-J stent as internal diversion after urological procedures. MATERIAL AND METHODS We reviewed all the medical records of patients who had a ureteral double-J stent after a urological procedure from August 2007 to May 2013. We have analyzed the following data: age, gender, type ...

Heparin coating on ureteral Double J stents prevents encrustations: an in vivo case study.

PURPOSE To evaluate the ability of heparin coating to inhibit Double J stent encrustation and compare it with the classic polyurethane Double J stent. PATIENTS AND METHODS The study involved five patients with bilateral obstructions, who required bilateral ureteral Double J stent placement. Every patient received a heparin-coated Double J stent and a traditional polyurethane Double J stent fo...

An Indwelling Urethral Catheter Knotted Around a Double-J Ureteral Stent: An Unusual Complication after Kidney Transplantation

Urethral catheterization is a common procedure with a relatively low complication rate. Knotting of an indwelling urethral catheter is a very rare complication, and there are only a few case reports on knotted catheters, most of them concerning children. We report an especially rare case where a urethral catheter formed a knot around a double-J ureteral stent after a kidney transplantation. We ...
